There are many ways you can help a child
Nationwide, there are more than one hundred thousand children in the U.S. foster care system waiting for permanent families.1 Child welfare professionals must recruit potential adoptive families for these children who are waiting for adoption.
A national survey by Harris Interactive revealed that 48 million Americans considered adoption from foster care in 2007, however:2
- *67% were unnecessarily concerned that biological parents could return to claim the children. After the court finalizes the legal termination of parental rights, the parents can NEVER return to claim the child.
- *46% mistakenly believed that foster care adoption is prohibitively expensive. In reality there is very little cost to adopt from foster care, and there is financial support available for all adoptions.
- 36% were unsure or confused about the adoption process.
- 45% believed children in foster care have entered the system because of juvenile delinquency. The vast majority of the 129,000 children waiting in the U.S. foster care system entered through no fault of their own, as victims of neglect, abandonment and/or abuse.
Cadman Foundation’s goal through 2010 is to find a minimum of 500 new families to hear the call of becoming foster care parents in Michigan. How are we doing this? By engaging the faith-based community; collaborating with city, county, and state agencies; working with private adoption agencies; and building global connections.
Cadman Foundation’s ultimate goal is global - to find loving, stable homes for all 143 million orphan children of the world.
